The Wakatipu High School project is one of four large new school projects won by the ASC Architects/Hawkins construction team as the second of the Private Public Partnership (PPP) school agreements with the Ministry of Education.
At 10,570m2 and relocated to a new site at Remarkables Park, Wakatipu High School will open in time for the 2018 school year. The school consists of a main administration wing, comprising of a large 350 seat theatre, gymnasium and administration services. The main learning arms reach back and join to form an enclosed courtyard.
The entrance to the school has a welcoming community feel and invites participation. Transparent and activated, the foyer becomes a gathering space, a multipurpose space that connects the external with the internal, connecting shared spaces such as the café, library, theatre and gym with both the school and wider Wakatipu community.
The theatre and music practical rooms will also benefit from dedicated recording studios. Other specialist spaces will include elements such as sprung floors for dance and drama. The science learning area will include an outdoor learning space or ‘science garden”.
The school has been designed to achieve a 5 Greenstar built rating and will provide learning environments beyond the typical standard. The total value of the PPP2 school projects is in the vicinity of $300 million and supersedes the first PPP project as perhaps the most significant Ministry of Education project.
