Laura Fergusson High Needs Unit

Auckland

2012

Laura Fergusson Trust provides a suite of rehabilitation services across the greater Auckland, Waikato and Whanganui regions. The trust has engaged ASC Architects to design a new high needs unit in Auckland to provide accommodation, treatment and rehabilitation facilities for clients who have suffered strokes and severe head injuries.

Located on their existing Great South Road site, the building sits within an established residential neighbourhood and is adjacent to the southern motorway and rail line.

To reduce the visual scale of the building, and fit comfortably into the residential area, we have created a three-level concept separated into two wings and a central core, each separated by glazed links. The retention of existing major trees and vehicle access points also has a large influence on the design.

The design, while conceptual at this stage and currently awaiting board approval to proceed, will accommodate 46 single bedrooms in household pods of four to six bedrooms, each with its own lounge, dining and bathroom facilities. Additional facilities include administration, consulting rooms, training and meeting rooms, a gymnasium and cafe.
