ASC Architects designed the McDonald's original restaurant which was built in 1997 and located along Quay Street in Auckland City. This is a prominent site along a busy road heading to the eastern suburbs from the city.
The remodel of the premises in 2011 resulted in additional dining at the ground floor level, new decor to the interior and customer service areas. Externally traditional corrugated steel cladding was used and this resulted in a simple but bold new look. White ACM cladding to the ribbon is contrasted against the dark corrugated sheet material. Signage on the new addition has moved towards a more subtle appearance from the original design.
The Quay Street restaurant remains prominent among the otherwise mix of retail buildings nearby.
