Barbarians RFC Lounge
As the BRFC were to lose their original clubrooms for the redevelopment of Eden Park for the 2011 Rugby World Cup, ASC Architects were engaged to design a new Lounge on the upper level of the ASB Stand, which was to also incorporate the two eastern corporate boxes as an extension to the facility. The brief required the club’s new home to retain some of the atmosphere and amenities previously enjoyed but in a contemporary style. But just as importantly the old clubrooms had become predominantly a male domain, and the brief also required the new rooms to be attractive and comfortable for the ladies.
To achieve a ‘club’ style salvaged items from the original rooms, including stained glass windows, were incorporated into the design, as were memorabilia, photos, paintings, jerseys, cups and books. These were displayed in purpose designed shelving units and glazed cabinets as an integral part of the overall décor. Leather and timber furnishings also added to the ‘club’ style . The Barbarians’ famous red jersey colour and logo also became strong features of the clubrooms, as did the club motto ‘Rugby is a game for all gentlemen in all classes but no bad sportsman in any class’ , which is proudly displayed above the bar.
