McDonald’s, Taradale
When first purchased by McDonald’s the Taradale Hotel was to be demolished to make way for a new standard McDonald’s restaurant. After many discussions with the Art Deco Trust the decision was made to keep the ‘base’ building and convert it into the first McDonald’s Art Deco restaurant in New Zealand.
The Taradale Hotel consisted of a core Art Deco building and two relatively recent additions, one, the accommodation wing and the other a garden bar. Both built using concrete block and timber framed construction and not suited to re-use or conversion. These wings were demolished, the rest of the building stripped out including the floors, and reconstructed to include all the necessary McDonald’s requirements.
The conversion required protecting and maintaining all of the desired elements of Art Deco design, then reconstructing approximately 30% of the rear of the building, constructing suitable Drive Thru canopies and a substantial front entry portico. A supreme award has been given to McDonald’s New Zealand and their architect by the Art Deco Trust in Napier in recognition of a very successful conversion and the retention of a valuable Art Deco building. The Trust were appreciative of the fact that McDonald’s saved the building and went the extra distance to preserve a valuable example of Art Deco design in Napier, the ‘Home’ of Art Deco in New Zealand.
